Swiss voters make LGBTQ+ discrimination illegal through referendum

In Switzerland, exit polls show that 62% of the population voted in favour of criminalising LGBTQ+ discrimination.

The Swiss were asked to vote on a law prohibiting people from discriminating against sexual preference or identity. Opponents say the law would restrict freedom of expression.

There was already an anti-discrimination law for religion, race and ethnicity. Since Sunday, it also applies to LGBTQ+ people. According to Mathias Reynard, politician for the Swiss Social Democrats, the referendum result sends a «signal which is magnificent for everyone and for anyone who has been a victim of discrimination», Reynard called it «a historic day», Out.TV reports.
