Hypothetically: A Queer Short Film Explores Friendship, Fear and First Love
A heartfelt queer coming-of-age drama from Nightingale and Ward Productions follows a teenager who uses hypothetical questions to reveal his feelings for his best friend on the day of their final A-level exam.
New short film follows a teenager's struggle to reveal his feelings on the most important day of his school life.
A new LGBTQ+ short film is shining a spotlight on the emotional challenges many young queer people face when navigating friendship, identity and unspoken feelings.
Hypothetically, produced by Nightingale and Ward Productions, tells the story of Dan (played by Joseph Straughan), a teenager preparing to sit his final A-level exam before leaving for university. With a major life transition just hours away, Dan decides it is finally time to tell his best friend, Joe, something he has been keeping hidden for a long time.
Unable to find the courage to speak openly, Dan approaches the conversation through a series of hypothetical questions. Using imagined scenarios as a shield, he carefully tests how Joe (played by Joshua G.T. Horsfall) might react if somebody were secretly in love with their best friend.
The film captures a familiar experience for many LGBTQ+ people: the fear of risking an important friendship by revealing romantic feelings. Set against the backdrop of the final day of school, Hypothetically explores themes of vulnerability, self-discovery and the uncertainty that often comes with major life changes.
Despite its simple premise, the short film promises an intimate and emotionally resonant story. The dialogue-driven narrative focuses on the complex dynamics between two close friends, highlighting how difficult it can be to express feelings that have remained hidden for years.
The timing of Dan’s confession adds further emotional weight. With university just around the corner, he faces the possibility of leaving his feelings unspoken forever, forcing him to confront the question of whether honesty is worth the risk.
LGBTQ+ short films have increasingly become a vital platform for telling authentic queer stories, allowing filmmakers to explore personal experiences and relationships with sensitivity and nuance. Hypothetically joins a growing body of work that examines the realities of queer youth through relatable and heartfelt storytelling.
For audiences who enjoy character-driven dramas and coming-of-age stories, Hypothetically offers a poignant look at the courage it takes to be honest with oneself and with the people who matter most.
As Dan’s final day at school unfolds, one question remains: when everything is changing, is there ever a perfect moment to tell your best friend how you really feel?
