Britney Spears’s ex Sam Asghari backs powerful new film about LGBTQ+ Muslims: «Being yourself is beautiful»
Britney Spears’s ex-husband Sam Asghari is throwing his weight behind a bold new short film spotlighting the experiences of LGBTQ+ Muslims — a project already generating buzz across queer media, including attitude.co.uk, which first highlighted the actor’s involvement.
The Traitors star appears in Freedom of the Fly, a gripping drama inspired by a true story and shaped by real‑world headlines documenting the persecution of gay men in several countries, including Asghari’s native Iran.
Produced by Canadian outfit 23Production, the film follows a young gay Muslim man battling to reconcile his sexuality with his religious upbringing and the expectations of his family — a rarely explored conflict that has struck a chord with audiences hungry for authentic representation.
In a newly released promo clip, Asghari opens up about why he felt compelled to join the project, stressing the importance of visibility for those who feel forced to hide who they are.
«My inspiration behind this short film is to amplify the stories for those that are struggling with their sexuality», he says, calling the act of embracing one’s identity «beautiful».
Asghari, who moved to the U.S from Iran at the age of twelve, has increasingly used his platform to champion marginalised voices. His support for the film has already been picked up by LGBTQ+ outlets, with attitude.co.uk noting the significance of a high‑profile Middle Eastern figure backing such a story.
Freedom of the Fly is currently in production, with a release date and viewing details still under wraps — but anticipation is building fast.
