Outright International calls on the World Bank to halt loans to the government of Uganda
In response to Uganda’s approval of the Anti-Homosexuality Act of 2023, a piece of legislation that aims to exterminate LGBTQ persons, Ugandan LGBTQ advocates have urged the World Bank to halt all existing and future loan payments to the Ugandan government. Outright International supports their request. Health, education, housing, employment, and economic infrastructure projects are among the government-sponsored initiatives that are supported by World Bank funding to reduce poverty.

Ted Cruz and President Joe Biden have both denounced the Ugandan law. American Christian organisations, some of which had previously supported such severe anti-LGBTQ policies, lobbied for the legislation for years.

Uganda’s Anti-Homosexuality Bill, which includes the death penalty for «aggravated homosexuality», is harshly condemned by the International Bar Association’s Human Rights Institute (IBAHRI).

Ugandan lawmakers introduced legislation in parliament on Thursday that proposes harsh new penalties for same-sex relationships in a country where homosexuality is already illegal, defying human rights groups’ criticism.
