Ulrich Siegmund: The Man Who Wants to «Deport Millions» And Bring Russian Gas Back, Is One Step From Power

AfD firebrand wins historic election victory in Saxony-Anhalt, critics warn of a direct line to the Kremlin.

He’s only 35. And he may be weeks away from becoming Germany’s most powerful AfD politician, perhaps even the first AfD Ministerpräsident in history.

Ulrich Siegmund, opposition leader in Saxony-Anhalt and co-chair of the AfD state parliament faction, just delivered the best result the party has ever achieved. According to projections, the AfD sits at a stunning 44 percent, miles ahead of the CDU, which collapsed to under 18 percent.

But critics warn of what comes next. Because this isn’t a man being dragged into scandal by his party. He made his own headlines.

The Secret Meeting That Shocked Germany

In early 2024, investigative journalists at Correctiv revealed that Siegmund attended a notorious November 2023 meeting at the luxury Landhaus Adlon hotel in Potsdam, alongside figures of the «Neue Rechte», including right-wing extremist Martin Sellner.

The agenda? A reported «master plan» for mass so-called “Remigration», the expulsion of millions of asylum seekers, foreigners with residence rights, and even “non-assimilated” German citizens.

That meeting ignited the largest protests Germany had seen in years. Siegmund, however, remains at the top of his party.

The Kremlin Connection

Now a new angle is shaking up German politics: Putin’s potential back door into Berlin.

According to Der Spiegel, if Siegmund becomes Ministerpräsident, the Putin-friendly AfD of Saxony-Anhalt — considered particularly pro-Russian — could hand the Kremlin access to highly sensitive German state information. The podcast piece warns bluntly that the party’s ascension could give Putin unprecedented influence over German domestic politics.

And Siegmund’s own record feeds the debate. He has remained notably noncommittal on Russia’s war of aggression, while openly demanding the resumption of Russian gas imports, «as if the war of aggression never happened», as Focus Online put it.

Theproximity extends beyond him: according to reporting by MDR, members of the AfD Saxony-Anhalt leadership publicly honored Vladimir Putin’s birthday, drawing sharp criticism. Regional deputy Hans-Thomas Tillschneider, who repeatedly made headlines for his closeness to Moscow, traveled to Russia after the 2022 invasion with the goal of reaching the occupied Donbas region — a trip cut short under pressure from the party’s federal leadership.

When asked about Russia’s invasion itself, Siegmung has stayed remarkably quiet. His energy policy, however, speaks volumes: he demands the resumption of Russian gas imports — as if the attack on Ukraine had never happened.

A Party Under Surveillance

And here’s the kicker: Siegmund’s own state branch was classified as confirmed right-wing extremist («gesichert rechtsextremistisch») by the Verfassungshschutz, the domestic intelligence service, in 2023.

Yet a politician from that very branch just became the front-runner to lead an entire German state.

One Vote From the Top Job

Even his victory speech raised eyebrows. On election night, Siegmund hinted at a wild thought experiment involving even the CDU. Shortly after, he floated fresh elections, having repeatedly declared he would only govern with an absolute majority.

Asked by BILD whether he’d pursue the top job with a one-vote majority, his answer: «We will decide on Monday. Let’s see how it goes».
