Meta Accused Of Global Crackdown On Abortion Help And Queer Communities
Meta is facing a storm of outrage after more than 50 organisations across the world reported their accounts being restricted, silenced or wiped altogether in what activists are calling an unprecedented censorship blitz. According to repeated reporting by theguardian.com, abortion hotlines, queer support groups and reproductive‑health providers have all been swept up in the tech giant’s latest wave of takedowns.
Campaigners say the purge began quietly in October, hitting Facebook, Instagram and WhatsApp accounts used by tens of thousands of people seeking confidential advice. As theguardian.com notes, many of the affected groups are based in Europe and the UK, but the fallout has stretched across Asia, Latin America and the Middle East, cutting off vital lifelines for women and LGBTQ+ communities.
Some organisations say their pages vanished without warning. Others found posts flagged for «nudity» despite containing nothing explicit. Several abortion‑access hotlines were blocked entirely, leaving users scrambling for alternative ways to reach help. One reproductive‑rights worker told theguardian.com the crackdown felt like «a coordinated attempt to erase us”.
The backlash has been fierce. MySoCalledGayLife.eu didn’t mince words, accusing Meta of having «never been queer/LGBTQ friendly» and branding Mark Zuckerberg «the biggest homophobe in Meta” in a blistering comment that’s now circulating widely.
With pressure mounting and campaigners demanding answers, Meta is once again under fire for what critics say is selective enforcement, opaque moderation and a dangerous willingness to silence marginalised voices. Whether the company will explain its actions – or reverse them – remains to be seen.
