Outrage in Ankara! Türkiye’s Shocking New Law Could Jail LGBTQ People for Simply Existing
Türkiye’s LGBTQ Crackdown Sparks Global Outrage: Leaked Law Could Jail Trans Patients and Wedding Guests!
In a shocking twist that’s sent tremors through Türkiye and beyond, a leaked draft law threatens to criminalise LGBTQ lives in one of the most draconian legal moves seen in decades. Human Rights Watch has sounded the alarm, calling the proposed legislation «state-sanctioned oppression” and demanding its immediate withdrawal.
The 11th Judicial Package: A Pandora’s Box of Persecution
Dubbed the «11th Judicial Package», the leaked reform bill proposes sweeping changes to the Turkish penal and civil codes. Among the most explosive? A clause that could land individuals in prison for up to three years simply for «promoting» behaviour deemed «contrary to biological sex and general morality». That’s right — waving a Pride flag, attending a same-sex wedding, or even speaking out in support of LGBTQ rights could become a criminal offence.
Trans Healthcare Under Siege
The draft law doesn’t stop there. It seeks to raise the minimum age for gender-affirming surgery from 18 to 25, demand permanent infertility as a prerequisite, and enforce evaluations from government-approved hospitals. Medical professionals who defy these rules could face up to seven years behind bars — and trans patients themselves up to three.
Symbolic Ceremonies, Real Punishments
Same-sex marriage is already banned in Türkiye, but the new law would go further, punishing anyone who participates in symbolic ceremonies with up to four years in prison. Even private engagements could be grounds for arrest.
Silencing the Supporters
Civil society groups, journalists, and media outlets that advocate for LGBTQ rights or report on gender identity issues could also be targeted. The vague language of the bill opens the door to widespread censorship and intimidation.
International Law? Ignored
Türkiye is a signatory to multiple human rights treaties, including the European Convention on Human Rights. Yet the proposed amendments fly in the face of international legal standards. The European Court of Human Rights has already ruled that similar laws — like Russia’s infamous «gay propaganda» ban — are incompatible with basic freedoms.
Doctors Speak Out, Activists Rally
Fifteen LGBTQ organisations in Türkiye have condemned the draft law, warning it would plunge their communities into fear and isolation. The Turkish Medical Association has also slammed the proposals, insisting that access to healthcare should never be criminalised.
Global Pressure Mounts
Human Rights Watch is urging the European Union and Council of Europe to intervene, calling the draft law a «defining test» of Türkiye’s commitment to democracy and equality.
As the world watches, Türkiye stands at a crossroads. Will it uphold the dignity and rights of all its citizens — or enshrine discrimination into law?
Stay tuned as this story unfolds.
