1. Prince Charles Stands Aside

The happy birth of a Royal Prince will convince Charles that the time has come to step aside from succeeding the Queen to allow Prince William to become King. Charles feels that not only would the role stifle his ability to pursue his passions but that the future of the Royal Family is safer in the hands of a younger and more progressive generation. He has the approval of his mother who knows that capitalising on the popularity of William and Kate is the best way of ensuring the survival of the family. The Queen has never been comfortable over the role of Camilla and has every confidence that William will make a good King. This will have overwhelming public support and Charles will use his new found freedom to campaign on environmental issues worldwide.

2. Premier League Comes Out of Dark Ages

This year will see the first openly gay Premier League Footballer come out in public. The player will come from a top four team and mark the beginning of a number of such announcements. Gay Rights Campaigners will welcome the admission that the Premier League is reflective of Society in general. The player, an England International, will receive widespread support for breaking down barriers and give other players the confidence to speak out.

3. Coalition Collisions

The Spring will see the Coalition tested to its limits as divisions over Europe and the Economy threaten to bring down the fragile partnership. Nick Clegg will face a Leadership challenge prompted by his party’s growing frustrations at his failure to stamp his mark on joint policy decisions. This prompts fears that a General Election will be called and the general political uncertainty will dominate the year. Feeling bruised at the very public breakdown of his relationship with Katie Holmes he will announce a sabbatical from film making as his devotion to Scientology reaches new levels of intensity. Tom will cement his place as the natural successor to L Ron Hubbard and become the new face of the religion. He will continue to seek high profile converts from political and sporting life and will recruit some household names to his cause.

5. High Street Declines

The traditional High Street will continue to come under threat with the closures of more big names joining Blockbuster, Comet and HMV. Online shopping will become the norm for millions more meaning that our town centres are no longer the main focus of shopping activities. This will spread to supermarkets as home grocery deliveries grow in popularity and the number of sites acquired for development by the main brands goes into decline. Farmers Markets will be the only growth area for towns as the numbers of traditional butchers and greengrocers fall dramatically too.

6. I’m a Royal Celebrity

The Royal Family will court controversy again when it emerges that offers have been made to a minor Royal to join a reality TV show. In a coup for the BBC the Strictly Come Dancing Line up will feature a Princess among the usual line up of soap actors and sports stars. Despite much speculation the Queen will refuse an invitation to attend a show but this year will mark the final series for Bruce Forsyth as the BBC finally bows to criticism over his presenting style. The Corporation will officially announce that Brucie is reducing his commitment to the show but his appearances will become ever infrequent. In a blow to his career, Anton Du Beke will be disappointed in his wish to replace Bruce as the BBC feel a higher profile name is needed to carry the show on to new heights.

7. A Passport to Visit Scotland

Political tensions between the Auld enemies deepen in April as Alex Salmond raises the stakes with a pledge to require English visitors to Scotland to carry a passport in the event that independence is achieved. This is met with widespread opposition and is later dismissed as an April Fool but plays well with the pro-independence lobby who want Scotland to sever all links with Britain. The year will see the beginning of people migrating from Scotland into England as divisions grow between the two nations. Visitor numbers at the main tourist attractions fall prompting a debate in Scotland about the harm to the economy caused by the independence debate.

8. U Turn on Road Tolls

Already hard pressed motorists fear rising costs come Spring as the Government announces a system of national road tolls to help plug the economic gap. Rising fuel costs will be shown to have reduced the use of cars and the Government will see a fall in tax revenues from petrol sales. The Coalition will bank on plugging that shortfall by charging motorists to use all motorways but a national outcry on a scale not seen for decades will force a re-think. In the end David Cameron will announce a consultation over the plans and will quietly drop the plan toward the end of the year.

9. A British Wimbledon Champion

Last years tears of despair will turn to floods of joy for Andy Murray as he defeats Novak Djokovic in a thrilling Wimbledon final. The wave of sporting euphoria created in 2012 will continue on into this summer when the long wait for a British mens tennis champion will end. The fairytale will be complete with a live proposal to long term girlfriend Kim on the hallowed Wimbledon turf in front of stunned fans. Murray will also be a shoe in for Sports Personality of the Year as his victory brings ‘Murray Mania’ to new heights and marks his elevation to National Treasure status.

10. Temperatures Rise

The Summer will see temperatures soar making up for the damp squib that Summer 2012 became. Hosepipe bans will inevitably follow and there will be water rationing in place in some parts of the country. Tensions will rise as the water shortage bites and the police will have to deal with incidents of disorder at temporary water stations. This culminates in the death of a man in the South East following a row over queue jumping.

ITV will finally lose patience with falling ratings for the prime time weekend show and will announce in the Autumn that they will not renew the contract with Simon Cowells Syco Production Company. In another blow to Cowell this means an end also to Red or Black and will see him focus his energies on the American versions of his shows full time.

As Publishers seek to capitalise on the market for e-books the search for the new Fifty Shades will intensify and lead to a flood of new titles from unknown names. The adage that everyone has a book in them will be proved true as a new generation of writers come to the fore. There will be a backlash against the lurid subject matter of Fifty Shades and more wholesome reading will dominate as the use of e-readers grows among the older population.
